Mary GILCHRIST

Known as "Didi" to all her family and friends, died of a stroke at the Starwood Extendicare in Ottawa on June 9, 2002 with her loving husband William at her side. Didi was born March 29, 1914 in Slovakia and arrived in Canada after WW II heading for Yellowknife where she embraced the northern lifestyle. Didi was very active throughout the late 1940's, the 50's and the 60's with the Canadian Handicraft Guild in the development and promotion of Inuit carvings and prints. An accomplished golfer, she and her husband Bill challenged the fairways at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club and tested many other courses throughout North America. She is survived by her loving husband Bill, daughter and son-in-law Jean and David Sproule of Vancouver, Granddaughters Sidney Sproule of Toronto, Robin Sproule of Yellowknife, sister Katka Friedl of Vienna, Austria as well as extended family in Toronto and Ottawa. The family wishes to thank Dr. Dobson and the caring staff at the Starwood Extendicare for their kindness during Didi's brief stay.
