Dr. Thomas David Peacefully, at Island Lodge, Ottawa, June 10, 2002, at the age of 87. Son of the late Frederick Northwood and Reena (Cochrane) Northwood. Graduated in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto in 1938, received his M.A. and Ph.D.in Physics in 1950 and 1952. Reited from Building Research (now Institute for Research in Construction), National Research Council. His field was acoustics and his special interest was the architectural acoustics of churches, theatres and concert halls, which fitted well with his lifelong interest in music. He was a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the American Society for Testing and Materials. He was instrumental in the founding of the Canadian Acoustical Association and was President for a period. For many years, he was editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. He edited a volume in the Benchmark series "Architectural Acoustics" and published many papers. In recognition of significant achievements, he received the Wallace Clement Sabine Medal of the Acoustical Society of America in 1982 and the Wallace Waterfall Award from ASTM in 1989. Tom was an accomplished pianist and recorder player and enjoyed a long association with CAMMAC (Canadian Amateur Musicians/Musiciens Amateurs du Canada) and in 1965 and 1979, won prizes from CAMMAC for his compositions. From the 1950's until his death his health failed in the early 1990's, he directed an amateur recorder group in Ottawa. Tom was predeceased by his wife Yvonne (Brown) Northwood and granddaughter, Pamela Northwood and is survived by his former wife, Beatrice Northwood. He will be lovingly remembered as a quiet, amiable, humorous and unassuming person of many talents by his son, David Northwood (Ena) of Edmonton, grandchildren Stephen Northwood of Belleville, Dwight Northwood (Jennifer) of Hanna, Alberta, Rena Bibeau (Denis) of Edmonton, many great grandchildren, sisters Barbara Northwood of Toronto and Dorothy Hodgson of Ottawa, niece and nephew Susan (Norman Abraham) Hodgson and Andrew (Diana McCarthy) Hodgson, all of Ottawa, and several grand nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the loving care and attention provided for Tom over the last years by Jandy Lafleur, Shirley Duquette, Diane Champagne, Lori Mitchell, Julia Fraser, David Waldron, and the staff at Island Lodge. Visitation Sunday June 16, 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. at Hulse, Playfair and McGarry Central Chapel, 315 McLeod Street, Memorial Service in the Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2002.
