(Retired Ontario Hydro Inspector, Retired Secretary - Treasurer North Renfrew Telephone Co. Ltd., Charter Member of Lions Club International) - passed away on Monday July 1, 2002 at the Pembroke General Hospital in his 89th year. Beloved husband of the late Anna Irene Warren. Dear brother of Vernard (Lepha) Brown and the late Earl (Verlie) Brown. Dedicated father to Warren Brown, Ida (Ed) Gardiner, and the late Catherine Walker. Loving grandfather to Christie (Dan) Walker-Reitsma, Rhonda (Matthew) McNish, Lanny Walker, Anne and Jamie Gardiner. Dear great grandfather of Summer, Gunner, Sunshine, Matthew, Ty and Shane. His story telling will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews and he will be especially missed by his friend and cherished niece Grace Leech. Basil was the Secretary-Treasurer of the North Renfrew Telephone Company Ltd. from 1941 until 1975 (a position he shared with his late wife Anna). Basil studied electronics with the National Electronic Institute of Washington D.C. and in October of 1938 he opened his own Electric Appliance Shop in Beachburg. In 1949 Basil closed his business and joined Ontario Hydro as an Inspector and covered the area from Mattawa to Arnprior. He retired in 1978. Basil served as Secretary for the annual Beachburg Fair for 11 years. In 1953 at the first meeting of the Beachburg Lions Club, Basil was nominated as the Secretary and he continued with that role for 25 years. During his time he was the proud recipient of the Melvin Jones Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services, the Distinguished Service Award, the Silver Plague, the Silver Card, Life Membership, the 45 year pin and numerous 100% attendance pins. The family is grateful for the kindness shown by the Third Floor Nursing Staff of the Pembroke General Hospital and the staff at the Country Haven Retirement Home. Friends may call at the Malcolm, Deavitt & Binhammer Funeral Home, 141 Renfrew Street, Pembroke from 2 to 4 an 7 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday from 9:30 to 10;30 a.m. Service in the Chapel on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Interment in the Point Presbyterian Cemetery, Lake Dore. (In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Andrew's United Church BUilding Fund, Beachburg, Ontario would be gratefully appreciated.) Members of the Beachburg Lions Club are requested to assemble for service at the Funeral home on Friday, at 9:00 p.m. The Ottawa Citizen, 04-07-2002
