C.M., D Mus (Cantuar), FRCO, hon ARSCM Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa (1931 - 1980) At Starwood Nursing Home on Friday, August 30, 2002. Much loved husband of Marion Hewitt (nee Hogg) and loving father of Angela and John (Diana Sheng). Grandfather to Julia. Born in Cudworth, Yorkshire in 1909. After lessons at Leeds Parish Church, he studied at the Royal School of Church Music from 1929-31 where he won the Lafontaine Prize (1930). From 1930-31 he was organist to the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace. Declining an appointment as assistant organist at Westminster Abbey, he came to Canada in September 1931 and for the next 49 years was an inspiration to all as Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral. He then held the post of organist at the Church of St. Barnabas, Ottawa until his retirement in 1987. His work as teacher, solo performer, conductor, accompanist and composer was unique and he is remembered fondly by his many pupils and friends. In 1973 he received the Lambeth Degree (D Mus) from the Archbishop of Canterbury, and in 1976 was made a Member of the Order of Canada. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Tuesday, September 3rd from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Private interment Beechwood Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on October 5, 2002 (time to be confirmed).
