WWII Squadron Leader (RCAF) Distinguished Flying Cross A resident of the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre, on October 5, 2002, Bill silently and happily took off and, without filing a flight plan, crossed the bourn, and the mountain range beyond it on a journey from which no traveler returns. He was 85. He is survived by his daughter Dorothy (Mrs. Ron Alderson) of Thamesford, Ont., his granddaughter Erin, and a brother, Emmet (Betty), a retired firefighter, OFD, of Ottawa. During WWII, Bill did 2 tours of operations as a pilot during the 3 years (1941-44) he was attached to the Royal Air Force, and also served a tour as a flight instructor at an RAF Operational Training Unit (226 Squadron, 2 Group, RAF, No. 13 O.T.U. Biscester, Oxon, 21 Squadron 2nd Tactical Air Force RAF were the units with which he served). He was one of the first 3 captains hired for the first federal government VIP flight in Canada in 1950. Later he was Chief Pilot for Mobil Oil Canada in Calgary for some years. In the latter part of his flying career, he was an airline inspector with the Canadian Department of Transportation. Bill was proud to have been an early 1930's student of St. Pat's College. Bill held Canadian Airline Transport Pilot Licence No. AT-1. A memorial service will be held at Perley's on Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment at Beechwood Cemetery. The Ottawa Citizen, 09-10-2002
