nee King, passed away peacefully at the Elisabeth Bruyere Centre on Wednesday, November 28, 2002. She will be lovingly remembered by her three children, and their spouses, Jim and Masayo, Lesley, and Kate and Sambath; and by her grandchildren James Langevin-Frieson, Alexander Frieson-Chan, and Ryu Frieson. Joyce was born in East Hope, Manitoba, on September 18, 1928. As a young child she moved with her family to a wooden house by a lake in Malachi, Manitoba, a place of lakes and woods that she called her spiritual home. She attended the University of Manitoba completing two years in Arts and Sciences in 1946, and was a Graduate of McKellar General Hospital School of Nursing, a silver medalist of Class of 1951. She completed a Bachelor of Science in 1973 at Carleton University, obtaining first class marks while working full-time and mothering three children. She attended Harvard University's Women in Development and International Human Rights workshops in 1984 and 1989 respecitvely. Joyce was a great humanitarian. She devoted her life and considerable intellect to the causes of social justice, human rights, and gender equality, working in positions with the Canadian International Development Agency, CARE, Africa Emergency Aid, and the Canadian Council for International Cooperation Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Fund. Her experience as a registered nurse for twelve years in intensive care, and in gastroenterology, was later used and adapted to the development field. Joyce loved nature, botany, canoeing, camping, and mountain climbing. Joyce felt completely at peace sitting beside a lake in the woods - whether in Northern Ontario, Hornby Island in British Columbia, or in Nicaragua, Hungary, or more recently, Bosnia. Joyce loved international travel and always had a great interest in local customs and languages, including Spanish and Japanese. Joyce's other loves were music and books. She loved and studied classical music, played the piano, a passion she shared with her grandson James, a classical pianist. Joyce was an avid reader of contemporary fiction, and was well read in philosophy, politics and history. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Church in Ottawa, 30 Cleary St., on Saturday, December 14, 2002, at 7 p.m. followed by a reception in the Church hall.
