(89th - 109th Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment) (Member Bells Corners Legion) Max passed away peacefully in hospital on the 28th day of December 2002 at the age of 79 surrounded by his loving family. Special thanks to the staff at the intensive care unit at the Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus) for the wonderful care provided during his hospitalization. Born in Aetna, Alberta on December 10, 1923, Max had a distinguished World War II military career with the 89th - 109th Canadian Army from 1940 to 1945. He enlisted in Calgary, June 3, 1940 at the age of 16 and his basic training took him to Shilo, Manitoba. He left for England from Quebec City, on the Ile de France, December 10, 1940. In England he was with the Canadian Light Ack Ack at the Battle of Britain. In the fall of 1942 his unit sailed from the Clyde, Scotland for Sicily where he was transferred to the infantry. After the fall of Sicily he landed in Italy. Wounded at Coriana Ridge and after his convalescence in a military hospital in Rome he returned to his regiment. In early 1945 his regiment was transported through France to Divendrick, Holland. He returned to Canada on the Empress of Japan and was discharged in Calgary, September 15, 1945. Max was a dedicated employee for 33 years at the National Defence Medical Centre in Ottawa. Max is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara, of 56 years, one sister Gilda (Gaylon) of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta and a brother Dee (Fran) of Calgary, Alberta. His brother Cyril, RCAF, Navigator, WWII predeceased him. Max you were a wonderful and devoted father to Amy (Ken Garson), Calvin, Dee (Shelley Cunningham), Zoye (Glenn Wasson) and T.M. and loving grandfather to your eight grandchildren. You were a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and uncle, and friend to all who knew you. You were the silent rock that held us together. Many times we called upon your great patience and understanding throughout the years. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes 3440 Richmond Rd. (between Bayshore and Baseline Rd.), on Thursday January 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service on Friday in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. Private Veteran's interment to follow.
