Walter Charles Sr. SMAIL

Walter Charles Smail Sr., 78 Walter Charles Smail Sr., a life-time resident of Cardinal, died peacefully at his home, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002. He was 78. He was born March 9, 1924 in Cardinal, the son of Anson Smail and Annie Owers. He married Wilda May VanCamp June 16, 1947 in Cardinal. Mr. Smail was overseas for four years during WW11 with the Lords Strathcona Horse Regiment. Upon returning home, he went to work for the Canada Starch Company in Cardinal, where he was employed for forty years in the machine shop. He retired in 1984. Mr. Smail was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Cardinal. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Iroquois Golf Club. He enjoyed many great times with his family and friends over his life time. He was a long-time fan and helper of the Cardinal Pats Fastball Team. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105 and Masonic Lodge, Cardinal No. 491. He is survived by his sons Tom and his wife JoAnn and Walter and his wife Beth. He was the grandfather to Brian (Karie) Smail, Danielle (Brent) Napier, Mike Smail, Shawna (Adam) and Kortney and Nathan Smail and the great grandfather to Anson Smail of Brockville. He was a brother-in-law to Reginald Baynham of Brockville and Ellen VanCamp of Windsor. Mr. Smail is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be sadly missed by his long-time friend, Keitha Patterson, and anyone who knew him. He was a kind and gentle man. Friends called at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105 held a service Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002 for their fellow comrade. The funeral was held Monday, Nov. 18, with Rev. Doug Hayman officiating. Pallbearers were Garry Kavanaugh, Bob McDonald, Wes Baldwin, Ted Hoy, Gord Woods and Ed Orzel. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
