Elaine Marie Galway B.A. LL.B. Elaine Marie Galway passed away from cancer on May 6, 2002 at her parents home at Sweet’s Corners, Ontario. Elaine was born in Kingston on February 8, 1959, the daughter of Keith and Ruth (Shanks) Galway. She attended Lyndhurst Public School and later Rideau District High School in Elgin. After graduation, Elaine worked in the Law Department at Queen’s University and eventually earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. In 1989, she began studying law at Queens and obtained her law degree in 1992. After articling with the City of Kingston, she was called to the Bar in 1994. Following a short career as Assistant City Solicitor for the City of Kingston, Elaine returned to Queens to work in the Office of Alumni Affairs. At the time of her death she was a Planned Giving Officer with the Office of Advancement. Elaine was a very active member of Queen St. United Church in Kingston and had recently returned to school part-time to study theology at Queen’s Theological College. Prior to her illness, she had intended to pursue her studies full-time later this year to complete her Master of Divinity degree. Elaine lived a rich and full life. This was evident in the number and variety of close friends that filled her spirit. From childhood friends to numerous work connections at Kingston City Hall and Queens University to her classmates at Queens Law School and Queens Theological College, Elaine positively and warmly touched the lives of many people. Elaine had many dreams and ambitions throughout her life, from becoming a lawyer, which she did, to becoming a United Church Minister which, unfortunately, she was never able to realize. During Elaine’s Celebration of Life Ceremony her close friend and minister Wendy McLean rennie stated that Elaine met many people on her life path, people who shaped and supported her in both the good times and bad. Elaine was a true jewel in the path of more people than she will ever know. The outpouring of love for Elaine was unmistakable in the number of cards, letters, flowers, gifts and other tributes that were sent during and after her passing. Elaine is survived by her parents, Keith and Ruth Galway of RR#2 Lyndhurst, her brother Chuck also of RR#2 Lyndhurst, sisters Sandra (Ken Johnson) of Carleton Place and Dianne (Steve McCracken) of Belleville. She is also survived by nephew Robert McCracken and nieces, Justine McCracken, Ellen McCracken, Laura Johnson and Sylvia Johnson-Lay, as well as by many aunts, uncles and cousins. Friends called at the James Reid Funeral Home, Kingston on May 8th. A Celebration of Elaine’s Life was held at Queen St. United Church, Kingston on May 9th with the Rev. Wendy McLean rennie officiating. Interment was at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Rick Guthrie, Don Stewart, Greg Shanks, Tim Jardine, Murray McCarthy, Peter Hamilton and Robert McCracken. Honorary pallbearers were Kate Karn, Lisa Cuthbert, Marion Moyse, Sherry Mangan, Sue Weih, Ann Cinzar, Merrilees Muir, and Laura Costello.034298 6/22/2002- ID499642 - Kingston Whig Standard
