Sheila Doreen VanLuven A year has passed since we lost Sheila Doreen VanLuven. A dear wife, mother and grandmother, she was born on September 29, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Richard and Sarah Boon. Sheila’s father was in the military. When Sheila was approximately six years old, the family transferred to Kingston where they lived for a short time before moving to a farm in Hartington, Richard was transferred to Petawawa but the family remained in Hartington because they loved the location of their home. Sheila’s father passed away suddenly in 1941, leaving Sarah to raise Sheila and her brothers, Ken, Roy and Dick on her own. Sarah met and married William Condon, bought a farm near Harrowsmith and went on to have two more children together, Bill and Betty. Sheila attended Central Public School, Hartington and Harrowsmith Public Schools, and then went on to Secondary School at Notre Dame and Sydenham High School. Because her mother returned to work, Sheila was not only sister, but also like a mother to her two youngest siblings. She had a hard work ethic instilled in her by her father, and she helped her mother keep order in the home. On October 17, 1950, Sheila married Wilfred VanLuven and they went on to have three children, Fred, Sally and Douglas. Sheila loved her family and when Douglas began school she began attending evening classes at Sydenham High School to complete her grade 13. She then attended Teachers’ College in Ottawa from 1967 to 1968. Sheila began her teaching career in 1968 at Gananoque Linkletter School. In 1970, she went to Harrowsmith Public School and remained there for the balance of her teaching career with the exception of a one year exchange to Australia for the 1978-79 school year. During her teaching career and while raising her family, Sheila went on to acquire her Bachelor of Arts (Honours), and Masters of Education in Administration Degrees. She also found time to complete her Principals Course, Parts I and II. When Sheila retired in 1989, she began fulfilling her dreams of travel and was able to see most of the world. Sheila’s life has left a lasting impact on the lives of many. She was known for her generosity, for having an open door to those in need, and her devotion to her family. She will be sorely missed by her children, Fred, Sally and George, Doug, grandchildren Ryan, and Michelle. She is also survived by Ken (Beverly) Boon, Roy (Lois) Boon, Dick (Linda) Boon and Betty (Maurice) Shillington. She is predeceased by her parents Richard Boon, Sarah Boon-Condon and stepfather William Condon, brother Bill Condon and his wife Clara. The funeral was held January 4 with Rev. Nancy Clark officiating. Eulogies were delivered by Clara Snook and Pastor Jan MacPhail, Pallbearers were Gary, Larry, and Brent VanLuven, Rolland Shillington, Richard Boon and Victor Boon. Interment was at Harrowsmith Cemetery. At this time and always, the family remembers the kindness, compassion and true caring of the V.O.N nurses who took such good care of our dearest Sheila during her illness. With heartfelt appreciation we offer our thanks.086077 12/28/2002- ID1205416 - Kingston Whig Standard
