Mr. Jaroslaw Opyriuk January 08, 1915 - May 03, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Gordon F Tompkins Funeral Homes (Central Chapel) OPYRIUK, Jaroslaw Born in Volosiv, Ukraine, 8 January 1915, beloved son of Ustina Bagajluk, whose husband Wasyl Opyriuk was lost in the Great War, cared for by the sisters Zakh, a member of the Ukrainian cooperative movement and a Ukrainian patriot, he became a political refugee during the Second World War, served as an accountant with UNRRA in the Freiman Kasserne Displaced Persons Camp, eventually securing asylum in Canada, in 1949. He became a cook at Hotel Dieu Hospital and was a supporter o f the Kingston Branch of the Canadian League for the Liberation of Ukraine. Of an artistic temperament, he wrote and enjoyed poetry, classical music and literature. He is survived by his cousin and life-long friend, Danylo Luciuk, his wife Maria (Mak alo) and their children, Lubomyr and Nadia, as well as a great niece, Kassandra. The family will receive friends at the Central Chapel of the Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral Homes, 49 Colborne Street (at Clergy), on Thursday, between the hours of 7 to 9 p .m, Ukrainian Catholic Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. James chapel of St. Mary's Cathedral, 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 6. Rite of Committal St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko, 456 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3B 1B6.
