Robert Moyer Funeral arrangements by Regina Funeral Home MOYER - Robert Lloyd (Bob) It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of one of Canada's finest musicians and Big Band leaders, Bob Moyer. Bob leaves his wife and partner in music Pat Steel Moyer, brother Lyle Moyer, his children Dr. William (Bill) Moyer, Doug Moyer (Sherri Wright), Karen Bash, stepchildren Greg Krause, James Steel (Tracy), Carle Steel (Richard Spafford), grandchildren Allison Sparling, Amy Moyer, Eric Moyer, John Moyer, David Bash, Jennifer Bash and Taylor Bash, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Clara Moyer, and brother and fellow musician Keith Moyer. Bob was born in Craik, Saskatchewan, the son of a CNR railroad station agent. It was there that his scientific curiosity and musical education began. Bob graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1946 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He had a distinguished 32 year career as a design engineer for the PFRA Design Division. Bob was involved in many aspects of planning and design for the South Saskatchewan River Project and was the principal design engineer for the spillway crest of the South Saskatchewan River Dam (Gardiner Dam). He was published in Transactions of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers for his study on the benefits of shelterbelts to home heating costs. One of his passions was movie making, and he received a National Film Board award for one of his many amateur movies. Bob's greatest legacy is his enormous contribution to the musical life of Saskatchewan. Through his early work as a founding member of the Hobby Band in the 1950s, his many small group performances and recordings, and his stewardship of many years of the Bob Moyer Big Band, Bob kept jazz and big band music alive in the province for over 50 years. He was a mentor and role model to countless young musicians who got their start in the band. Bob valued his deep friendships with fellow musicians. Throughout his musical career he provided accompaniment for numerous show greats and jazz artists, including Bob Hope, Rich Little, Rosemary Clooney, Bill Cosby, Red Skelton and Bob Newhart. He also toured with legendary Big Band king and dear friend Mart Kenney. Bob received many awards in recognition for his musical achievements and his contribution to the arts community, including the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the inaugural Saskatchewan Jazz Festival Special Recognition Award and the 2003 Western Canadian Music Awards Heritage Award. Bob was presented with the first Lieutenant Governor’s Celebration of the Arts Pin by Her Honour, Dr. Lynda Haverstock, days before his passing. He will be remembered and sorely missed for his generosity and gentleness, and as a loving husband, father, and friend. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at Regina Funeral Home, Hwy #1 East, Regina, SK on Saturday, May 7, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. Details of an evening celebration will be announced at the service.
