OBITUARY EVELYN MAUD EATON Died peacefully at the Griffith McConnell Nursing Home, aged ninety-four years. She will be lovingly remembered by her dearest friend Sarah Paltiel, her niece Carol Jackman (Jean-Paul Schuller) of Val-Morin, her nephew Barry Jackman (Jen) of Springdale, Nfld., Renata Guttman and her many friends and colleagues from the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the English Montreal School Board. Born in 1911 in Montreal, daughter of the late Ernest Eaton and Sarah (Maude) Inskip. Her career began in 1929 with the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal and spanned thirty-five years. While teaching at Fairmount Elementary and West Hill High schools, she earned a B.A. from Queen's University in 1942 and an M.A. from Middlebury College, Vermont in 1947. In 1944 she became the first female Supervisor of French and in 1958 was promoted to Coordinator of French, a post that she held until her early retirement in 1964. In 1950, she was awarded the Order of Scholastic Merit by the Government of Quebec. She was co-author of several French textbooks used in Quebec elementary schools. In retirement, she worked as a volunteer student advisor at McGill's Royal Victoria College, and from 1971 to 1977, she taught English as a Second Language to senior federal officials. She will be remembered for her pioneering work in second-language teaching, her innovation in curriculum development, and her ground breaking success as an educational administrator. Evelyn was a founding member of the Gamma Province (Quebec) Delta Kappa Gamma International Society, and was its first President in 1956-57. She was also awarded an honorary Life Membership of the Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers of Quebec in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the Association and to the teaching profession. The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Staff at the Griffith McConnell Residence for their care and kindness over the past five years.
