Gerald Francis Burgess 1916 - 2005 REXTON, NB - Gerald Francis Burgess, 88, passed away Monday, May 30, 2005 at the Veteran's Unit, Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital, Moncton. Born in Saint John, Gerald was a highly regarded Deep Sea Captain who started his sailing career at the age of 12 under the watchful eye of Captain Alexander Fraser of Rexton. Gerald worked his way through Navagation School in Halifax and attained his Masters Foreign Going Steam Ship endorsement. His sailing career lasted 51 years where he captained ships all over the world. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the outbreak of Word War II serving as an officer on minesweepers and took part in the D Day Invasion. Gerald retired from sailing in 1979 and became active in the legion and Knights of Columbus - 4th Degree. He is survived by his wife, Catherine (Daigle) Burgess; two daughters, Geraldine Hudson (Ron), Rexton, Elizabeth Bryce (Tom), Victoria, BC; one son, Bernard (Janet), Gander, NF; four grandchildren, Rhonda Hudson, Andrew Hudson, Fredericton, Catherine Bryce, Ottawa, ON, Holly Bryce, Victoria, BC; several cousins. He was predeceased by his adoptive mother, Ellen Burgess and his uncle, Father Robert Fraser. Resting at Thompson's Funeral Home, Richibucto with visiting hours on Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm and Thursday, 9am until time of funeral. Funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Rexton on Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 11am. Interment in the Parish Cemetery.
