Joan Pamela Hanton (née Plomer) January 14, 1920 - June 08, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Jenkens Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre Joan Pamela Hanton passed to her rest on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at the Versa Care Centre after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born on January 14, 1920 in Croydon, England to Ethel and Harold Plomer. At the age of 12 she was predeceased by her mother and being an only child formed a strong bond with her father. They shared a love of nature and of music, and as a teen Joan loved to hike and ride her bike in the country and to skate in winter. As a young woman in England, Joan began to train as a hairdresser but this was interrupted by the war. During that time she worked in a factory, building radio tubes and had the good fortune to meet one of those “Canadian” boys who was helping to defend Britain. Chuck and Joan fell in love and were married in August 1945 and moved to Fort William in March 1948, bringing her father who was blind. He lived with them until he died in 1956. Joan was a stay at home mum who shared her love of nature and her creative and artistic abilities with her children Lynn, Kim and Lloyd. Her family was her top priority, she was proud of them and loved them dearly. Mum had a strong faith in God which was evident in her daily life. She was generous, kind and compassionate and would help anyone in need. Hers was a life of service to others and there was no such thing as a stranger, only a friend that she hadn’t met yet. She was active in her church, first at St. Luke’s Anglican Church and then the Thunder Bay Seventh-day Adventist Church. She took joy in the beauty of God’s creation which was evident in her garden and the many houseplants that dotted the windowsills. Mum like to knit, crochet, arrange flowers and write poetry. In her later years, her family and friends were robbed of the vibrant loving woman they knew as Joan, for she had developed Alzheimer’s. It came as a surprise as she was always healthy and on the go. She did her best to cope and was supported by her family, who forged a new relationship with her as her memory of them faded. Mum was cared for by Dad at home until it became too much for him and they went into the Versa Care Centre. He was the love of her life for 56 years before he passed away in March 2001. We will never forget the wonderful person we were so proud to call Mum and Nana. You will be lovingly remembered by your children Lynn Tait of Fonthill, ON, Kim (Ken) Lebel of Lacombe, AB and Lloyd (Sue) Hanton of Murillo, ON. Your grandchildren Jordy Lebel (Nathalie) of Calgary, AB, Lorise Lebel of Montreal, QC, C.J. (Charles James) Tait (Lynne) of Welland, ON, Kirsten Tait of Fonthill, ON and your great grandson Ezra of Calgary, AB. In keeping with her wishes, Joan will be cremated and a memorial service for family and friends to celebrate her life will be held in August. Details will be announced at a later date. Special thanks to Dr. Rick Almond for his excellent care through the years and to the nurses and staff of the Versa Care Centre. Their tender care for her is much appreciated and they helped to make her last days as comfortable as possible. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Thunder Bay.
