GIRSTUN, Witold Jan Passed away peacefully on January 24, 2005 with his family by his side at 82 years of age. Devoted husband of Genevieve with whom he celebrated 54 years of marriage. Loving father of Irene and husband Gino Morga, and Anne Bernardon. Treasured Dziadzio of Jennifer Morga, Victoria Morga, and Nathaniel Bernardon. Dear brother of Alina Bos of Poland and brother-in-law of Sabina Hillsburg of Perth, Ontario. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Ludwik and Maria, sister Bozenna and brother Zbigniew all in Poland. Witold was born on May 28, 1923 near Wilno, Poland and after the occupation of his homeland by the Soviet Union, he served, commencing in 1942, in the Polish Forces under British command in Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Egypt, and Italy where he saw action in the battles at the Sangro and Rapido Rivers, the battle for Monte Cassino, the battle for Ancona, the battle for Bologna, and the Northern Apennines. For his bravery he was awarded the Cross for Valour and the Cross of Monte Cassino by the Polish Government as well as the 1939 1945 Star, the Italy Star, the Defense Medal, and the War Medal by Great Britain. He was honourably discharged in 1946 when he emigrated to Canada. He retired from Dominion Forge after 35 years of service, and was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Church and a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 537.
