Alice SOLOMON

Alice Solomon Alice Solomon, a former long-time resident of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Feb. 5, 2005 in Silverdale, Wash. She was born in central Canada on Nov. 16, 1916. Alice graduated as one of only two women optometrists from the University of Toronto in 1936 and immediately began working as a optometrist at the Hudson Bay Company in Winnipeg, Man. Alice eventually took over her uncle’s practice in Kenora, Ont. and later opened a second office in Fort Frances, where at the time she was the only optometrist in town. In 1946, she married Dr. Barney Solomon, who was a new medical physician in town. They subsequently had three children. She and Barney were married 46 years with his passing in 1993. Alice was not only known in her professional field, but also was an exceptional artist with her works in oils, watercolour, pastels, and china paintings currently displayed in homes across the United States and Canada. Alice also was proud of her life membership in Beta Sigma Phi, reaching 65 years of membership. Overall, Alice will be remembered for her sincere kindness, quick wit, sense of humour, cute laugh, vast knowledge and interest in everything under the sun, and artistic ability. Her genuine interest in people’s lives meant she easily formed lasting friendships throughout her life. Being part of her five grandchildren’s lives was a never-ending source of joy for Alice. Alice’s memorial service was held in Washington, and her ashes are buried next to her husband, Barney, in Corpus Christi, Tex.
