SLOAN, Thomas Sheerer Peacefully at home Friday, June 3, 2005 at age 76. Born in Hamilton, the only child of the late T. Reginald Sloan and Mildred Sheerer. Mentor and dear companion to wife Margaret, loving father of Maureen (Wil), grandad to David, Alyssa, and Nicole. Tom graduated from U of T with a MA in Philosophy, travelled and studied in Paris and London during his early twenties. He then spent the next 40 years in journalism and teaching, and a friend once described him as a Renaissance man. Tom's good nature and humour, his love of languages, travel, and Wagnerian opera, the fun he had writing puns, his interests in history, journalism, politics, and international affairs made him one of kind. He was so knowledgeable and right to the end was concerned for social justice. The other love of his life was his beloved Tiger Cats, whom he never abandoned. Many thanks to Dr. Susan Wilkinson for years of dedicated care and to Dr. Louise Coulombe for giving him peace of mind and quality of life. To Sandra Boyd for her thoughtfulness and nursing care. Thanks to Chantal of the Ottawa Public Library's Visiting Services, to Peter for the weekly phone chats, and to Brian for the Sunday afternoon visits. At Tom's request, there will be no visitation or funeral. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice at May Court, 114 Cameron Ave., Ottawa, ON K1S 0X1 (www.hospicemaycourt.com) or a charity of your choice.
