Jessie Gertrude Mitchell July 19, 1919 - July 09, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Atlantic Funeral Home (Halifax) MITCHELL, Jessie Gertrude - 86, passed away July 9, 2005, in Oakwood Terrace, Dartmouth. Born July 19, 1919, in Middle East Pubnico, Yarmouth Co. She was a daughter of the late Newman and Lina (Spinney) Murphy. She is survived by her sister, Florence Wilmshurst, and nephews, Bruce (Joy) Wilmshurst, Conrod Settlement; Ronald (Joan) Wilmshurst, Langley, B.C.; Brian (Judy) Wilmshurst, Lake of the Woods; Ted (Dolores) Wilmshurst, Grand Desert; stepdaughters, Ellie Burns and Betty Robert, both of Ottawa. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Mitchell. Jessie spent her working life entirely in Halifax. She was with Maritime Accessories until 1957 when she became manager of Eastward Industries and Automatic Sprinklers. She moved on to manage Mitchell Plumbing and Heating in Halifax from which she retired. She was a long-standing acting member of St. Matthew's United Church on Barrington Street. She was treasurer and very active in the Ross Group of the UCW. All her life she volunteered in the community tirelessly. During the war, she worked at the Hostels set up for the military. Jessie spent many hours at Pier 21 greeting and assisting new immigrants. Later in life she spent many years at Camp Hill Hospital volunteering to assist the veterans. Memorial service will take place on Thursday, July 14, at 2 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Reception to follow in the funeral home.
