BECK, ALEXANDER P. - Alexander P. Beck, 89, formerly of Westbrook and Portland, entered into eternal rest Sunday July 17, 2005 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, where he had been a resident. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland on Dec. 5, 1915, the son of Alexander and Christine Donnelly Beck, and came to this country at the age of twelve. He attended parochial schools in New York City, namely Sacred Heart Elementary school. He ended his schooling early in order to help support his family. During 0, Mr. Beck served in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. Serving in the 3rd Battalion, 29th Marines, 6th Marine Division, he received a Bronze Star (with Combat V) for actions taken against the enemy on Okinawa. Mr. Beck was a retired employee of the City of New York, having worked for many years for the Sanitation Department. Mr. Beck married Mary Lawlor in 1954 in New York City. He and Mary retired to Portland in 1972. In retirement, they were passionate about travel, and enjoyed many trips throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. While living in Portland, they were communicants of Sacred Heart Church, and Mr. Beck was a member of the Ralph D. Caldwell American Legion Post. For the past six years, while living in Westbrook, Mr. and Mrs. Beck were communicants of St. Mary's Church. Mr. Beck's beloved wife, Mary, passed away March 6, 2005. He was also predeceased by his sister, Margaret Malone, on April 5, 2005. Mr. Beck will be remembered as a man who was always impeccably dressed at any occasion. He will also be remembered as a person who enjoyed social times with his wife and friends. More than anything, he will be remembered as being the "best uncle in the world" to the Malone gang. Surviving are his nieces and nephews in the United States, Mary-Ann Magnano & her husband James of Seattle, WA, Maggie Jones and her husband Mitchel of Buxton, John Malone and his wife Carol of Raymond, and Edward Malone and his wife Joyce of Caribou; his grand-nieces and grand-nephews, Sean Malone, Eddie Malone, Katie Malone, Matthew Jones, and Elizabeth Jones; as well as other nieces and nephews in New Brunswick, Canada. Visiting hours will be Thursday July 21, 2005 from 2-4 PM at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Friday July 22, 2005 at Sacred Heart Church, Portland. Burial will follow at 1:00 PM at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Maine Veterans Home, 290 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074. [Telegraph-Journal]
