SMITH, David D., M.A., Ph.D Peacefully on June 20, 2005, David Smith died at the age of 77 years at his home in Orleans, Ontario. Predeceased by his father, Philip, his mother, Molly (Trotter) and his brother, P. Gerald Smith. Survived by his beloved wife Norma (Metcalf) and their children Philip (Julia), Brenda (William), Valerie (Douglas), Rosalind (David) and Lorraine (Bruce), for all of whom he had much affection; and by his dear sister Sheila Alexander of Alliston, Ontario. He will also be missed by his beloved grandchildren Sean, Michael, Chloe, Fiona, Allison, Ryan, McKenzie, Kyle, Molly, Alexandra, Evan and Teri. David earn a B.A. at Sir George Williams College (1949), M. A. in psychology, biometrics and philosophy of science from the University of Minnesota (1950), and a Ph.D in Psychology from McGill (1957). In 1960 he accepted an invitation to establish a Department of Psychology at Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec and an appointment as Associate Professor of Psychology. During his career at Bishop's he served at various times as Head and Chair of the Psychology Department, Acting Head of Sociology, Chair of the Division of Social Sciences, Dean of Arts, member of the University Senate and member of the Executive Committee of the Corporation of Bishop's University. A B.A. in Fine Arts from Bishop's earned during a sabbatical leave in 1979 allowed him to offer an undergraduate course in the Psychology of the Arts, one of the few such courses in any Canadian university at that time. He was appointed Emeritus Professor on his retirement in 1987, and continued his scholarly work for a few years thereafter, publishing in the area of the role of human brain dynamics in personality and creativity. At his request his remains have been cremated without visitation or religious service. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
