SHIELDS, Michael Leo January 10, 1930 - July 17, 2005 On July 17, 2005, Michael Shields, age 75, passed away peacefully with his children Joe and Beth at his side, at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home in Kamloops, B.C; a place he helped to build as a volunteer carpenter. Born in Cormac, Ontario, Mike came to British Columbia in his early twenties and worked across Canada as a miner. In 1967, he and his wife, Mary, moved to Kamloops and built a life in this community. From 1977 to 1988, Mike worked at Afton Mine and, until his retirement, was part of the Carpenter's Union. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary in 2001, and his brothers Patrick and Terry, and sister Mary, Mike is survived by his children Joe and Beth, daughter-in-law, Lesley Brown, son-in-law Tim Harrison and grandchildren Michael, Mairin, Shana and Liam. One of six children, Mike is also survived by his sister Betty (Des) Harrington and brother Emmett (Kathleen) Shields, both residents of Ontario. Mike will be remembered for his warm, caring spirit, his generosity, and his positive approach to life. He lived one day at a time and had a deep, abiding faith. He was a wonderful person who enjoyed his time with friends and family and his company will be missed. The family would like to thank Father Al Noonan and the staff and volunteers at the Hospice Home. It was a great honour for Mike's children to be able to help him during the last stage of his life with compassion and dignity. A Prayer Service was held at St. John Vianney Church, 2826 Bank Road, Kamloops at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2005. The Reverend Father Al Noonan O.M.I. celebrated the Mass of the Resurrection on Friday, July 22, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery, Kamloops, B.C. Should friends desire, the family would appreciate donations to the Kamloops Hospice Association, 72 Whiteshield Crescent South, Kamloops, BC V2E 2S9 in Mike's memory.
