Renate Barbara Marion McCarthy January 12, 1947 - September 07, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Atlantic Funeral Home (Halifax) McCARTHY, Renate Barbara Marion - On September 7, 2005, Renate passed away peacefully at home. Born in 1947 in Berlin, Germany, she was the youngest daughter of the late Paul and Lydia Fetting. She received her education in haute couture tailoring and finished with distinction. She continued to live and work in Berlin until immigrating to Canada in 1968. For over 30 years, she was the owner of a small business where she designed and custom tailored garments for women. Her many clients greatly appreciated her work. She also taught a tailoring class for several years. As a mature student she enrolled in the Costume Studies Program at Dalhousie University in Halifax and graduated with the highest marks. Following her studies, Renate enjoyed working as a tailor and seamstress for movie and television productions; friends will remember her work in Stars on Ice, various musicals and ballets. With great enthusiasm, she recreated authentic 18th century uniforms for the Fortress of Louisbourg. She liked physical activities like tennis, weight training and swimming. Her many passions included traveling, gardening, reading, knitting and silver jewellery making. Renate is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, John Martin McCarthy; son, Charles, Halifax; brother, Siegfried Wilhelm Fetting, Lisbon, Portugal; stepsister, Monika Fischer, Berlin, Germany, and stepniece, Heike Rothé, Berlin, Germany. She was predeceased by son, James, and stepmother, Gertrud Fetting. Cremation has take place. The family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday. A reception will follow in the funeral home.
