James Allen RENDALL

James Allen Rendall August 06, 1933 - August 11, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Leyden's Funeral Home (Calgary) James Allen Rendall passed away quickly and unexpectedly August 11, 2005 while vacationing with his grandson. The two were salmon-fishing to celebrate Jim's recent reluctant "retirement" from a lifetime committment to legal academics, a profession to which he devoted himself after fledging from the family farm in Collingwood, Ontario. Jim pursued law at Osgoode Hall (the original) after graduating from Vic (Victoria College/University in the University of Toronto), where he met and later married his life's partner, Katharine Ann Boyce of Arnprior, Ontario. The two made a life together first in Toronto, then in London, Ontario, later in Halifax, and for the last 27 years in Calgary, where Jim was Professor of Law at Western, Dalhousie, and the University of Calgary. Jim's passion for the law and especially for teaching it, reflected a broader passion for learning, for knowing, and for sharing what's known with others, which activities he always embraced with a quick wit, a loquacious spirit, and a relentless attention to factual detail. Jim now rejoins Kathy who passed away April, 2000. The two are survived by brothers Bob Rendall and Hugh Boyce, and their wives Marg and Fay, sons Alan, Ed, and Drew, and their wives, Lori, Carol, and Karen, and grandchildren Kirstie, Kevin, Eric, and Kate. Visitation for family and close friends Sunday August 21 (4:00- 7:00pm) at Leyden's Funeral Home (17th Ave. and 2nd St. SW; 403-228-4422). A celebration-of-life service will be held Monday August 22 at 7:00pm in the Rozsa Centre on the University of Calgary campus (403-220-4900). In lieu of flowers, and at their own discretion, friends may contribute to a student Scholarship established at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law, in the name of James and Katharine Rendall (403-220-4115).
