HOWARD, LESLIE GORDON - Leslie Gordon, "Hank", age 82, of 135 Kennedy Court, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2005, at home surrounded by his family after a long, valiant battle with cancer. Born July 26, 1923 in Highbury, Kings County, Nova Scotia, he was a son of the late Roland Hill Howard and Florence Louise (Ruggles) Howard. He was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Forestry degree in 1949. He worked for many years with Fraser Companies in New Brunswick before moving to Nova Scotia where he was employed with Scott Maritime's Pulp Limited until his retirement in 1985 after 36 years in his profession. He became a lifetime member of the registered Professional Foresters Association of New Brunswick in 1988. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941-1945. A lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34, he received his 50 year pin in 1995. He was an avid sportsman and woodsman all of his life enjoying hunting, fishing, prospecting, curling and golfing over the years. He also served his community by being a Boy Scout leader for a number of years and by presenting lectures to young folks on the wonderful beauty of the woods and trees. Since retirement he has pursued building canoes, cane making and oil painting. Recently predeceased by his wife Rose (nee McGuire) of 56 years, he is survived by four beloved children: Peter (Donna), Stellarton; Janet (Bert) Griffon, Dartmouth; Eric (Debbie), Steve (Sue), both of St. Albert, Atla. Surviving grandchildren are Kristopher and Kimberely Griffon, Brent and Graham Howard, Patrick and Conor Howard. He was predeceased by his only brother, Hollis Eugene who was lost in the war at the age of 21. Visitation 7-9 pm Friday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held at 10 am Saturday with Rev. Foster Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Following the committal, the family will meet with friends in the Sister Catherine Steele Centre, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34 New Glasgow, will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 pm Friday to conduct their tribute service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, 835 East River Rd., New Glasgow, N.S., B2H 3S6 or Our Lady of Lourdes Building Fund, 122 North Foord St., New Glasgow, N.S., B2H 5G7.
