VALLEE-RAI, Raja. Aged twenty-nine, died August 18, 2004 at Charles LeMoyne Hospital, in Longueil, Quebec. Cherished son of Krishan Rai and Louise Vallee-Rai, and beloved brother of Anne-Sita Vallee-Rai, and Manuel Vallee, Raja touched many with his kind and generous heart, and will be fondly remembered by many. He left us all to soon, but with faith that he was going to a more peaceful place. Raja completed his B.Sc. in computer science at McGill in 1997. That year he was also a first-place winner in the ACM/IBM "Quest for Java" programming contest. In 2000, Raja completed his M.Sc. thesis, entitled "Soot: An Optimization Framework for Java Bytecode". A committed scholar, Raja was the first author of the Soot compiler optimization framework, which a McGill research group has continued to develop, and is now widely used for research and teaching purposes around the world. In addition, Raja was the co-author of five research papers published in international conferences. A memorial service will be held at St-Leon Church, at 4311 de Maisonneuve, in Westmount, on Friday, August 26, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Les Oeuvres de la Maison du Pere (tel: 514-845-0168), or Action Autonomie (tel: 514-525-5060). Published in the Montreal Gazette on 8/26/2005
