PLATONOW, Dr. Maria (nee Fetisowa). Peacefully, at St. Mary's Hospital on September 29th. Beloved wife of Oleg, cherished mother to Ellen and Victor (Maia), loving Baba to Evan and Marc. She will be sadly missed by many relatives and friends. A remarkable woman, Maria was born in the Soviet Union and lived through the Stalinist regime to become a physician, helping her fellow citizens during the Second World War and Nazi occupation. After escaping at great personal peril to the west, she resisted the British forced repatriation of the Cossacks in Lienz at the end of the war, and in later years testified against this war crime in London. Immigrating to Canada in 1948, she studied at McGill and then worked as a microbiologist at the Montreal General Hospital for thirty years, retiring to tend her beloved gardens. A charming and intelligent woman, Maria affected everyone she met with her incredible spirit, warmth, and humanity. Requiem (Panihida) will be held on Friday, September 30th at 7 p.m. at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral, 422 Blvd. St. Joseph O. in Outremont. The Funeral will take place on Monday, October 3rd at 10 a.m., thence to the St. John Orthodox cemetery in Lachine. Published in the Montreal Gazette on 9/30/2005
