GARNET EMILE COUNCILLOR Garnet Emile Councillor, 66, of Northwest Bay First Nation, passed away Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. Garnet was born Feb. 23, 1939 at Northwest Bay First Nation to the late Rennie and Agnes Councillor. He had lived all his life in the district. He was a native healer and also a traditional dancer at the pow-wows in the area. He also had worked as a logger, guide, firefighter, and at the local paper mill, and also was the owner/operator of his own business, Garnet’s Gas Bar. Most of all, though, his family was very important to him and he loved them dearly, especially his grandchildren. Left to cherish his memory are his five daughters, Verna (Manuel) Lucio of Enderlin, N.D., Tina Chiefson, Melvina Chiefson, and Gina (Curtis) Smith, all of Northwest Bay First Nation, and Starr Klink of Finland, Ont. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his sister, Rosie Snowball of Northwest Bay First Nation; brother, Larry (Tammy) Councillor of International Falls, Mn.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary; son, Austin; parents, Rennie and Agnes; and brothers, George, Clarence, and Randy. A traditional service was held Monday, Sept. 12, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Northwest Bay First Nation gymnasium. Elder Gilbert Smith officiated, with interment in the Northwest Bay First Nation Cemetery. The pallbearers were Manuel Lucio, Curtis Smith, Mitchel Chiefson, Nathaniel Councillor, Glenn Smith, and Bruce Black.
