WALLACE NELSON HUGHES Wallace (Bubs) Hughes, of Devlin, Ont., passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005 at the Emo Hospital in Emo, Ont. Bubs was born June 16, 1924 in Atwood, Ont. to the late Wallace and Ivy Hughes. He attended Atwood and Rainy River schools. He later moved to Devlin in 1936 and lived with his Uncle Bob and Aunt Ethel Strachan. While there, he attended school in Devlin until Grade 10. Bubs served in the Navy during World War II from 1943-45. He trained on the U.S. Hamilton, the M.V. Maureen, the S.S. Elm Bay, and the S.S. Dominion Park in the Atlantic and the Pacific. He was honoured with a Confederation Medal, Atlantic Star, Pacific Star, 1937-45 Star, Voluntary Service Medal, and Overseas Service Medal. On May 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to the late Jean Cooke in the home of Rev Tolton. Bubs farmed for most of his life, and also was mail carrier at the Devlin post office from 1971-96. He was a member of the municipal council for 28 years, a Burdavit Credit Union board member, and a member of the Co-Operative Shipping Association. He also was past president and a life member of the Emo Legion Br. #99, and had received Senior of the Year for La Vallee Township in 2001. Bubs was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Jean, on May 9, 1995; his brothers, Victor (in 2001) and William (in 1994); and his sister, Betty (in 1996). He is survived by his friend, Peggy Livingston; daughters, Donna (Cal) Haglin, Diane (Nevin) Bonot, and Trudy (Bob) Badiuk; six grandchildren, Tim and Laura Haglin, Tracey and Steve Advent, Michelle Bonot, and Jackie, Jen, and Mike Badiuk; and two great grandchildren, Brookelyn and Evan Haglin. He also is survived by his brother, Ted (Jessie) of Rainy River, Ont.; sisters, Judy Dimit of Red Lake, Ont., and Doris (Jim) Herkes and Nancy Shaw, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Marg (Morley) Weatherbee of Thunder Bay, Ont., Lois (Wilfred) Caul of Devlin, Ont., and Faye (Ted) Davis of Fort Frances, Ont.; brother-in-law, Dave (Clareen) Cooke of Fort Frances, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Emo Legion. Rev. Barbara Miller officiated, with interment in Devlin Cemetery in Devlin, Ont. Visitation was held Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005 from 7 until 9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont. Pallbearers were Bob Woolsey, Jim Belluz, Bill McLean, Dale Strachan, Murnie Allen, and Dennis Allen. Honourary pallbearers were all of Bubs’ friends and acquaintenances.
