Ellen was born in Fort William on September 4, 1916 to Frederick (Cass) and Eva Cracknell. As a young lady she worked for several small businesses in Fort William before marrying Gordon Nelson Pinner in 1942. Several years later, she attended Kings’ Business College and went to work for the Cheadle law firm as a legal secretary, for Moorehouse Forwarding, the Crippled Children, and the Ontario Government as a secretary. In the latter job, she was recognized for her contribution to the founding of the Lakehead Social Planning Council. Gordon and Ellen spent many hours fishing and hunting, enjoying the outdoors and each others’ company and that of their extended family. When he became ill, she became his devoted nurse, constant companion, and passionate advocate until his death in 1980. Through all the challenges of her life, Ellen remained cheerful, always maintained a positive attitude, and was fiercely independent. She was a good friend and neighbour, and treasured those who were in turn kind to her. Her home and extended family were her world. She was a wise and kind woman, with high ideals for herself and others, and became a cornerstone of her family. Ellen was predeceased by her parents, her husband Gordon in 1980, brothers Stanley Cracknell, Gordon Cracknell and Walter Cracknell, sisters Eva Pinner and Josephine Powell. Also predeceasing her were other members of her family who were also her closest friends - Harry Pinner (wife Eva, her sister), George and Myrtle Pinner, Ruth Pinner, Roy and Shirley Pinner, Arthur and Kathleen Pinner, Frederick Pinner, Percy Glover, Frank Lang and Hal Powell. Left to mourn her passing are her sister Elizabeth Glover (Burns Lake, BC) and several nieces and nephews Gordon (Judy) Pinner, Helen (Gary) Peel, Averil (Gary) Willick, Bill (Shari) Pinner, Debra Glover (Ken Breakwell) and Jo Ann Beauchamp and their families. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff and volunteers of the Cancer Clinic for their efforts and help during her prolonged illness, Dr. Capricci for her excellent care for many years, Gail from Comcare for her care and friendship, the VON for their professionalism and compassion, the Hospice Unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital for making her last days comfortable and happy and especially her close friends, Cosma and Elsie for their love and understanding. When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me I want no rites in a gloom filled room Why cry for a soul set free Miss me a little – but not too long And now with your head bowed low Remember the love that we once shared. Miss Me – But Let Me Go For this is a journey we all must take And each must go alone It’s all a part of the Master’s Plan A step on the road to home When you are lonely and sick of heart Go to the friends we know And bury your sorrows in doing Good deeds.
