Mr. Nicholas Mieras March 25, 1934 - November 22, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Sands Funeral Chapel (Nanaimo) After a brief battle with cancer, Nick passed away peacefully in Nanaimo General Hospital with his family by his side. Predeceased by his son John and brother Peter, Nick leaves behind Faye, his beloved wife of 49 years, his daughter Val, son-in-law John Flegel and many friends, sisters/brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed. Born in Bruno, Saskatchewan, Nick came to Nanaimo with his family at the age of 11. His working life began as a logger, and as a mate and deckhand on tugboats, followed by 35 years with Nanaimo School District #68, first as a bus driver and later as the district’s furnace mechanic. During his years with the School Board, Nick was active with the Nanaimo & District Labour Council and his own union, CUPE 606, including several years as the local’s President. Over the years, Nick excelled at his hobbies, winning several awards with the Vancouver Island Shooting Club and with dog obedience trials. After his retirement in 1994, Nick’s hobbies included fishing, camping and gardening. He and Faye enjoyed several winters in Mexico, driving down in their truck and camper. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 28, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Sands Funeral Chapel, #1, Newcastle Avenue, Nanaimo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart Fund, Cancer Research, or to the charity of your choice.
