MILLER, OLIVE WINNIFRED - Wyn Miller was a lifetime resident of West Saint John. She was born to Annie (O'Dell) and William E. Lawson, the fire chief of Lancaster. She attended Beaconsfield School at the end of the Depression. She was a proud graduate of Vocational School where she acquired a life-long interest in history and literature. These experiences gave her a sense of social justice and a love of reading, both of which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. During World War II, she performed as a singer and dancer in troop shows for soldiers, sailors and airmen. She visited hospitals with badly injured and dying servicemen. These were deeply affecting experiences that she spoke of only in later life. Her family had a summerhouse at Morrisdale, across the river from her future husband Jack Miller. He would sail across the river in his sailboat to visit her and they remained married for 47 years. She was employed by the Telegraph Times and British American Oil for several years until she made motherhood her career. In 1953 Wyn and Jack moved to the new suburb of Quinton Heights, along with many other young families. She played a major role in the design and construction of a new house needed to accommodate her growing family. She was an excellent mother to her four sons David, Peter, Paul and Andrew. During the 1960's, she traveled often with her husband across the U.S. at brewing conferences, and helped to organize the social program for such a conference held in PEI. A fiercely independent person, she lived in her own house until her sudden death, paying close attention to the lives and travels of her sons and their families. This was only possible with the dedicated support of the two sons who lived nearby, Peter and Andrew. Living on the edge of a bird sanctuary, she maintained a keen interest in the wildlife and birds. She was predeceased by her husband Jack W. and will be missed by her sons David (Pamela) of Ottawa, Peter (Lou Anne) of Saint John, Paul (Judy) of London, Ontario and Andrew (Cheryl) of Saint John. Wyn was the beloved grandmother of Emily, Jonathan, Erin, Meghan, Kenneth and Jack. At her request, there will be no funeral. Her ashes will be interred later this year in Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Canadian Wildlife Service.
