Frederick Paul DELONG

DeLONG, LT. COL. (RETIRED), THE REV. CANON F. PAUL - Surrounded by his family, Frederick Paul DeLong, 77, passed away peacefully on Friday February 4th at the Charlotte County Hospital. Paul, son of Leanard and Pearl DeLong, was born in Saint John, New Brunswick where he attended Saint John City School. He graduated from Kings College in Halifax in 1948 with a degree in Theology. Paul was ordained in May of 1949 and married Betty C. Garrison of Halifax, Nova Scotia in August of that same year. The first parish of his 56 year Ministry was in Oak Bay, New Brunswick followed by two years in Jemseg, NB. Canon DeLong enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Chaplain with the rank of Flight Lieutenant and began a 27 year career, retiring with the rank of Lt. Col. in 1982. He saw world wide duty serving as Base Padre initially and eventually as Command Chaplain of Maritime Command. He was appointed a Canon of the Military Cathedral in Ottawa, Ontario in 1970. Canon DeLong returned to civilian Ministry in 1982 serving St. Stephen Anglican Parish. Paul and Betty enjoyed their return to Parochial life in the province they loved so dearly. Canon DeLong retired from active Ministry in 1988 and remained in the Parish in a part-time capacity as Honorary Assistant. After being predeceased by his wife, Betty in 1992, Paul remained an active member of Christ Church. In February, 1994, Paul remarried Ruth E. Williams of Montreal, Quebec. They took up residence in St. Stephen, NB sharing a ten year marriage. Canon DeLong was predeceased by: Father, Leonard; Mother, Pearl; Brothers, Kenneth and Hazen and wife, Betty. He is survived by wife, Ruth; children, Marie and Bob Biggar of Ontario; Monty and Mary DeLong of Sackville, New Brunswick; Chris and Grace DeLong of Manitoba; Anna And Eliot Singer of Virginia; Joyce and Garth Orchard of St. Stephen; stepchildren, Shirly of PEI; Gordan and Julie of Ontario; Norman and Kathy of Alberta; 14 grandchildren; a brother Russell, and sister Dorothy and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all who's life he touched. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Church Memorial Fund. Due to family request, there will be no viewing. A Memorial Service for Canon DeLong will take place at Christ Church, St. Stephen, New Brunswick on Monday February 7th at 2:00 pm. Luncheon to follow.
