MALONE Lavalette Ingram, Deirdre Deirdre Lavalette Malone died on Tuesday February 1, 2005. Predeceased by her husband Thomas Paul Malone. She is survived by daughter Patricia and sons Anthony, Mark, Christopher and David; daughters-in-law Suzanne (Labbe), Isabelle (Raud), Carole (Marsot), son-in-law Robert Lyons; grandchildren Charles, Justine, Julian, Nicholas, Antoine Malone; Sarah, Elizabeth and Kathleen Lyons; great-grandchildren Maya and Alex. Deirdre Malone, scholar, journalist, intrepid traveller, devoted mother and wife was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1915. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Sefton Erroll Ingram. After graduating from Sydney University with First Class Honors and medals in History and English Literature, she joined the editorial staff of Sun Newspapers, Sydney, as a columnist. In 1940, she married Paul Malone, a Canadian journalist working as a guest editorial visitor on the Sun, travelling under sponsorship of the Commonwealth Press Union. They departed immediately for Canada where he worked briefly for the Edmonton Journal and the Vancouver Daily Province before being appointed press attache of the Office of the High Commissioner of Canada in Canberra and Representative of Canada's Wartime Information Board in Australia. During their subsequent 37-year diplomatic career, she resided in Canberra, Ottawa, Washington and The Hague. Following his appointment as ambassador to Iran in 1962, High Commissioner to Nigeria in 1967, Ambassador to Israel in 1972 and Ambassador to Finland in 1975, she lived in Tehran, Lagos, Tel Aviv and Helsinki. While Paul served on the Directing Staff of the National Defence College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, Deirdre attended courses at Queens University on Quebec Literature and circled the globe several times. They lived in Ottawa and in Cyprus following retirement in 1980. A life-long scholar, she followed courses in comparative religions, archaeology and modern languages at Tehran, Tel Aviv, Helsinki and at Queens (Kingston, Ontario) Universities. Her skill as an artist enabled her to bequeath to members of her family paintings of many memorable scenes from her travels. They remember her with pride as a loving and gifted wife, mother and grandmother. Friends may assemble for a Funeral Mass on Monday, February 7, 2005 at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa's Church (Somerset & Cartier Sts).
