Ronald R. GILFILLAN

GILFILLAN, Ronald R. L.R.C.P., L.R.C.S., Ed., L.R.F.P.S. Glasgow, F.R.C.S. Glasgow, F.R.C.S. Edinburgh With family at his side and after a short illness, Dr. Ronnie died on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2005 not long after the death of his wife Dr. Veronica and two days before his 82nd birthday. Ronnie was a vital, vibrant, creative, intelligent, witty and talented man with his own sense of direction. Sailor, musician, cyclist, skier and in his youth in Scotland, an avid climber, his sense of adventure and insatiable curiosity enriched his life and the lives of those around him. A 45-year career in medicine included several tours of duty as a parachuting officer in the British Army Medical Corps. He worked in the largest European Chest Unit at Shotley Bridge in Newcastle and in other British locations before his work as a thoracic surgeon took him from the UK, initially to the US and then to Canada. He practiced in Toronto, Pembroke and in Ottawa at the Riverside Hospital from 1969 until retirement in 1988. His wife, Dr. Veronica, assisted with surgery and in running the practice as well as conducting her own practice, all in addition to raising the family and helping to weave the rich fabric that was their lives. Children Fiona Gilfillan (John Wemekamp), Ronald Gilfillan and Minnie German (Andrew) invite all friends and colleagues who would like to celebrate the lives of the "Two Ronnies" - Ronnie and Veronica - to a gathering at the National Arts Centre, on Friday the 18th of February, 2005, between 5 and 8 p.m. Reminiscence will take place at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Hospital or the Juvenile Diabetes Association are appreciated.
