BECK, MARY E. - Mary E. Beck, R.N., 94, of Westbrook, died Sunday, March 6, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Portland. She was born on May 15, 1910 in DeBec Junction, New Brunswick, Canada, a daughter of Charles D. and Annie (Griffin) Lawlor. She attended New Brunswick parochial schools, and was a graduate of St. Vincent's High School in St. John, New Brunswick. Mary was a 1933 graduate of the Queen's Hospital School of Nursing in Portland. In the mid 1930's, Mary moved to Connecticut to pursue her nursing career at a hospital. In the late 1930's, she moved to New York City, where she worked at St. Claire's Hospital, French Hospital, Roosevelt Hospital and Veteran's Hospital. In 1954 she married Alexander P. Beck in New York City, and, in 1972, they retired to Portland. Her and her husband were passionate about travel, and enjoyed many trips throughout the United States and parts of Europe and South America. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, a member of the Mercy Hospital Alumni, and the Paulist League in New York City. Mary was predeceased by her parents, two sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her husband, Alexander P. Beck of Westbrook; her brother, James Cooper of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada; and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her. Visiting hours will be 2-4pm on Wednesday, March 9 at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home at 9:15am on Thursday, March 10, followed by a 10:00am Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church, 80 Sherman Street, Portland. Interment will follow at 1:00pm at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta. [Telegraph-Journal]
