Hazel Ellen Maria Luhta (néé Pasanen) Who died peacefully, after a 5 month illness, in the comforting presence of her only son, Lorne Eino Luhta (wife Diane) and only daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Thompson (husband Dan of Toronto), at the Extendicare Residence in Schumacher on Wednesday, February 9th, 2005. Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Eino Luhta, in March of 2000. Hazel was also predeceased by many siblings: Roy Pasanen of Chelmsford; Sadie Pajala of South Porcupine; Elmer Pasanen of Porcupine; Alden Pasanen of Marathon; Nora Lehtimaki of Porcupine; Leonard Pasanen of Vancouver; and Eddie Pasanen of South Porcupine. Hazel is survived by her brother, Albert Pasanen (Aino) of Sudbury. Hazel is also survived by her two grandchildren: Erik Luhta (Sarah) of Porcupine and granddaughter, Leanne Meagher (Cashel) of Sudbury. Hazel was also great-grandmother to Leanne and Cashel’s daughter, Clew Hazel Meagher. Hazel was born in Grove Park, Saskachewan, on February 23rd, 1921 of parents, Tynne Ellen Maria Pasanen and Jalmar Pasanen. The family moved to Rouyn, Quebec, then onto Larder Lake and finally moved to South Porcupine. Hazel lived in South Porcupine for over 70 years. Hazel lead a very active sporting life all her life. In early days, she participated in Finnish sports events in mass gymnastics as a member of the Viesti Sports club in South Porcupine. Hazel skied, bowled, skated and hunted in her earlier years. In her mid-life, Hazel was a member of the Dome and McIntyre Curling Clubs. As well, she began taking up the sport of golf 43 years ago, and was a member of the Hollinger Golf Club all that time and held many positions on the Women’s Executive of the club. Hazel was a very focused competitor in curling bonspiels and golf tournaments. Donations in Hazel’s memory should be made to The Porcupine Ski Runners, Box 250, Schumacher, Ontario or can be held in trust at the Stinson Funeral Home, 100 Bruce Avenue, South Porcupine. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Timmins Hospital for their care. We would also like to extend our thanks to the caregivers at the Extendicare Home who made the last weeks of Hazel’s life comfortable. A future double interment of Hazel and Eino Luhta will be held in the spring of 2005, at the Whitney Cemetery in Porcupine. To celebrate Hazel’s life, a luncheon and memorial time together is to be held at the Legion Hall (downstairs), on Saturday, February 19th, at 12:00 noon. - 2/18/2005 - ID5695481
