BERTRAND, Norris R. 1924 - 2005 (M.D. FRCS FACOG) Early Wednesday, March 2, 2005 passed away peacefully at the Starwood Nursing Home in Ottawa. He is survived by his wife, Jean, four daughters Jane (Larry), Penny, Pamela (Hans), and Margie, six grandchildren - Emily, Mischa, Alex, Zack, Joel and Joshua; brother Ross (Fran) and their four children and sister Marilyn and her four children. Born to May and Victor Bertrand in Milo, Alberta, Norris grew up in a farming community. He attended the University of Alberta graduating in medicine in 1948. He interned at the Royal Alex Hospital in Edmonton and married Jean Layng from Regina, Saskatchewan in 1950. He practiced family medicine in Calgary for seven years and then returned to the University of Alberta to complete a specialty in obstetrics and gynaecology in 1960. Norris, Jean and their four daughters returned to Calgary where Norris practiced obstetrics and gynaegology for 36 years. He was an associate professor in the new medical school at the Foothills Hospital, University of Calgary. Upon his retirement in 1987, he had delivered over 5000 babies. Jean and Norris moved to Ottawa in 1987 to be nearer to their daughters and grandchildren. Known as Grandpere to his grandchildren, Norris took great delight in watching them grow up. His only granddaughter Emily lived in Ottawa and was very special to him. The family expresses gratitude to the caring staff of the Starwood Nursing Home. A Memorial Service will be held a the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Saturday, March 5, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow.
