STICK, Phyllis Stapells. Eighty-six, of Colington Island, N.C. went to be with her Lord on February 5, 2005 in Salem, Va. Mrs. Stick was the cherished mother of Michael (Debra), Gregory and Timothy (Kathy); adored grandmother of Aimee, Renee, Robert, Michael, Joshua, Trevor and Honor; beloved aunt of Rae Gourlay, Anne Roberts, Ken Matheson, Hugh Matheson, Richard Stapells and Susan Myers. Mrs. Stick was also a dear friend and minister to many. Born in Toronto and raised in Montreal, Mrs. Stick was a graduate of McGill University. She was a gifted educator who taught swimming and diving in Montreal and later tutored and taught physical education in Jamaica. Upon moving to Miami, Florida, Mrs. Stick served as the Director of Health and Recreation for the Miami YWCA and Conceived the Festival of Nations celebration in 1947. Mrs. Stick moved to the Outer Banks of N.C. in 1948 and began a lifetime of service to her community and her church. She organized a neighborhood youth club and later established and taught the first kindergarten program on the Outer Banks. Mrs. Stick was a Sunday School teacher at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and for over 25 years an inspired leader of her bible study group. She also served as the president of the Circus Tent Christian ministries and was a founder and vital part of Creative Ministries. Mrs. Stick lived each day of her life in accordance with her beliefs and was an inspiration to all who knew her. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2005 at the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church in Kitty Hawk, N.C. beginning at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity.
