LALONDE, Florent C.M. Formerly of Welland, Ontario passed away in Ottawa on Friday, March 11, 2005 in his 90th year. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Laura (1998) and by his parents and three brothers. Florent and his wife Laura moved to Welland from Timmins as a teacher in 1944. He taught at Coronation, Central, Plymouth and General Vanier Schools. Upon his retirement from teaching in June 1974, he served as Trustee on the Niagara Board of Education from 1974 to 1991. Florent has been a very active member of the Francophone community. He was a founding member of La Caisse Populaire Welland, in 1947 and served as chairman of its board for 21 years. He was also involved in the establishment of five other Caisses Populaires, Port Colborne, Niagara, St. Catharines, Hamilton and Toronto. He is also a founding member of the Welland Richelieu Club in 1957 and served as its President in 1963. He has been a leading member in the initiative to establish Residence Richelieu 1978 and Foyer Richelieu 1989. In 1984 Florent was appointed by the Minister of Health, the Honourable Madame Begin as the first Franco-Ontarian to the National Advisory Council on Aging for a three year term. In 1985 Florent was awarded the country's highest distinction, The Order of Canada, presented by the Govenor General Madame Jeanne Sauve. The funeral service will be held in the local church of his native parish, St-Isidore, Ontario on Saturday, March 18, at 11 a.m. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
