POTVIN, Thomas Raymond, o.p. Le frère Thomas Raymond Potvin est décédé à l'unité de soins palliatifs du Centre Élisabeth-Bruyère, à Ottawa, le 28 mars 2005, à l'âge de 70 ans. Né à Worcester, MA., le 22 septembre 1934, il était le fils de Germaine Hamel et d'Edgar Potvin, tous les deux décédés. Il laisse dans le deuil sa famille dominicaine, ses six frères et soeurs, de nombreux neveux et nièces, ainsi que ses collaborateurs et amis, et les étudiantes et étudiants qui ont bénéficié de son enseignement et dont il dirigea les travaux. Après ses études secondaires et collégiales, il entra dans la province canadienne de l'Ordre des Frères Prêcheurs (Dominicains) où il fit profession le 4 août 1957. Il fit ses études philosophiques et théologiques au Collège dominicain de 1957 à 1963. Il a été ordonné prêtre le 30 juin 1962. Il poursuivit des études doctorales à l'Université de Fribourg (Suisse) et en Allemagne, à Munich. De retour au couvent Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Ottawa en 1967, il devint professeur de théologie fondamentale et d'ecclésiologie, poste qu'il a occupé depuis. Il a également été secrétaire-trésorier du Collège dominicain de 1967 à 1988. Il était membre de plusieurs sociétés savantes, dont l'American Theological Society et la Société Canadienne de Théologie dont il fut le président. Le 24 novembre 2004, le Maître de l'Ordre des Prêcheurs lui décernait le titre de Maître en Sacrée Théologie. Après avoir été prieur du couvent d'Ottawa de 1987 à 1993, il a été élu provincial des dominicains du Canada de 1993 à 1997. Le Frère Potvin a exercé son ministère pastoral à la paroisse Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Ottawa et dans plusieurs paroisses du diocèse d'Ottawa. Il fut également prédicateur de retraites, surtout pour les prêtres, notamment au Nouveau Brunswick. La dépouille mortelle de notre frère sera accueillie à l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Ottawa le 7 avril, à 17 h 45, puis les visites auront lieu jusqu'à 22 h et le 8 avril, de 9 h 30 à 22 h. Les funérailles seront célébrées au même endroit le 9 avril à 10 h 30. L'inhumation suivra en après-midi au cimetière des dominicains à Saint-Hyacinthe (Qc). Friar Thomas Raymond Potvin passed away at the Palliative Care Unit of the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre in Ottawa, Monday, March 28, 2005 at the age of 70. Born in Worcester, MA., September 22, 1934, son of the late Germaine Hamel and the late Edgar Potvin. He leaves his Dominican family, his six bothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews, collaborators, friends and the students whom benefited from his teachings and work assignments. After his High School and Collegiate studies he entered the Canadian Order of the Dominican Preaching Friars where he was ordained August 4, 1957. He completed his philosophical and theological studies at the Dominican College between 1957 and 1963. He was ordained priest June 30, 1962. He pursued doctorate studies at the Fribourg University of Switzerland and in Munich, Germany. He returned to the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Convent of Ottawa in 1967, and became professor of fundamental theology and ecclesiastic teachings, an assignment he has held since. He also was the Secretary-Treasurer of the Dominican College from 1967 to 1988. Member of many Knowledge Societies including the American Theological Society and the Canadian Theology Society of which he presided over. On November 24, 2004 he was awarded the title of Sacred Theology Master by the Master of the Preaching Friars Order. After being priest of the Ottawa Convent from 1987 to 1993, he was elected Provincial of the Dominicans of Canada from 1993 to 1997. Friar Potvin was minister of pastoral care at the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Ottawa parish, and various other parishes in the Ottawa Diocese. He was also retreat minister, mainly for priests, notably New Brunswick.
