Samuel Leroy Johnston July 30, 1934 - March 24, 2005 Funeral arrangements by Atlantic Funeral Home (Dartmouth) JOHNSTON, Samuel Leroy - It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden death of Samuel Leroy Johnston, Dartmouth. Sam, aged 71, passed away unexpectedly on March 24, 2005. Sam sustained an injury while playing his favorite sport, hockey, with his team, the Shearwater Ancient Mariners. Born in DeWolfe, N.B., he was a son of the late George and Vivian (Hatt) Johnston. He was the beloved husband of 50 years of Frances (Theriault); loving father of Gerlyn (Murray) Rodgers, Ottawa; Dale (Valerie) Johnston, Ottawa; Kim (Rick) Johnston, Whitby, Ont., and Michael (Carolyn) Johnston, Dartmouth. He was lovingly called "Papa Sam" by grandchildren, Greg, Katie, Angela, Samantha, Stephanie and Carly. He is survived by several brothers, sisters, and their families (Albert, Kenneth, Florence, Earl, Gerald, Raymond, Clarence, Hazen, Sharon, Roger, and the late Marvin, Gordon, Shirley, and Willis); in-laws, Father Eric Theriault, Sister Patricia Theriault (Sister of Charity) and Edie (Al) Comeau. Sam served in the Canadian Armed Forces after 31 years of service and he was later employed by IMP. He was a Fourth-Degree member of The Knights of Columbus Council 11456, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 160, the Martock Senior Skiing Group, and was involved in the Shearwater Aviation Museum. He was an avid sports fan, who loved playing hockey with his most caring team mates, The Shearwater Ancient Mariners, who were together for many years, and playing bridge and cribbage with his card buddies. Sam was very actively involved in his parish church, St. Vincent de Paul. He will be truly missed by his family and many friends. Arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Gardens, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, March 29, at 1 p.m., in Saint Vincent de Paul, 320 Flying Cloud Dr., Dartmouth. Private internment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Saint Vincent de Paul Stewardship Centre and would be appreciated.
