KATTAN, Harone. Peacefully, on Monday, April 18, 2005, in his ninety-seventh year. He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife Suzanne Khalastchy, his daughter Vivienne Birshan of London, England and her husband Jamil; his son Dr. Meyer Kattan of Tenafly, New Jersey and his wife Pnina; and grandchildren Michael and Lara Birshan, and Justin and Jacob Kattan. Harone's life was one of great accomplishments and service to the community, arriving in Montreal from Baghdad, Iraq in 1953. He became leader of the Iraqui Jewish Community of Montreal and President of the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue 1982 to 1984. He worked with devotion on many charitable committees and organizations. He was Life Governor of Maimonides and Jewish General Hospitals. His love of Canada, dedication to his community and general "Joie de vivre" endeared him to those who came in contact with him. He was awarded the Commemorative Medal in 1993 by the Canadian Government for his "significant contribution to compatriots, community and Canada". A special debt of gratitude is owed to the doctors and staff at the Mount Sinai Hospital and to his caregiver Necita, who cared for him with love and dedication. Funeral service on Wednesday, April 20 at 1 p.m. at the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, 4894 St. Kevin. Burial at Congregation Spanish & Portuguese Cemetery, Mt. Royal.
