Frank WATKINS

WATKINS, GROUP CAPTAIN F.H., DFC CD RCAF JAN 1941-MARCH 1967 Frank has left us in his 91st year to join his loved and loving wife of 55 years, Charmian Ross who said farewell seven years ago this month. He leaves behind his children Melissa (Harry), Christopher (Anne) and Michael (Hawaii); his grandchildren Michael (Lin Su) (China), Robert, Joanne (UK) and Neil, his great-grandson Felix, his brother Stanley (New Brunswick) and his nieces and nephews. An officer and a gentleman he was a man loved by his family and friends and respected by all who knew him. On active service in W.W. II he flew Halifaxes as part of No 6 Group Bomber Command serving with 428 Ghost Squadron and then 434 Bluenose Squadron of which he became commanding officer in 1944. His citation for his Distinguished Flying Cross read "This officer is an extremely efficient captain and leader whose example of courage, skill and resolution has been an inspiration to the members of his squadron". Remaining in the RCAF his regular service included postings as commanding officer at Rockcliffe (1954-1958) and Namao (Edmonton 1964-1968). A man of considerable charm possessing a wicked sense of humour he will be sorely missed. The world will seem a little poorer with his passing. Born in Winnipeg in 1915 he sadly completed his journey through this life on a snowy Ottawa morning. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
