Mortensen: Helen Irene (nee Gagstetter) 1920 - 2005 Helen Irene Mortensen (nee Gagstetter) born January 18, 1920 in Excel, Alberta, died July 1, 2005 in Drumheller, Alberta. She will be missed but forever remembered by her loving husband of 59 years, Tom; her two children Corinne (Drydale) and Allen; her grandchildren Logan (Michelle), Tod (Pam), Ward, Niels and Julia; and by her great grandchildren Chase, Colten, Reese and Kenna; as well as by her extended family (Niels Mortensen, Joe and Rosa Merkel, and nieces Linda, Sandy, Diane, Arlene and Maureen and their families) as well as her many friends and neighbours. Helen was predeceased by her brother Dick (Richard), her mother Merle Gagstetter, a baby Dick (Richard) Mortensen, her father Elmer Gagstetter, her sister Glenna Harper and her son-in-law Don Drydale. Helen lived most of her life in or near the Drumheller Valley and loved the beauty of the Valley with its hills, river and abundance of wildlife. They moved to Rosedale when she was a young girl and that is where she met Tom. They were married in Drumheller on October 12, 1946. They moved to Dalum in 1957 where they farmed until they retired to Drumheller in 1976. Mom loved to sing and was a member of a choir most of her life. She was very proud to be a member of the Passion Play Choir for several years. Helen was a doer and so was an active worker in many organizations such as C.G.I.T. The Women?s Institute, The Ladies Militia, The Dalum Friendship Club, the Drumheller Hospital Auxiliary, and the Pioneer Trail Centre. She believed in doing what she could to help others and enjoyed being part of organizations that catered to others. In addition to her many organizations she loved to garden and raise plants. She also loved animals and helped raise and care for many over the years. A Service of Remembrance will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at 2 p.m. from Knox United Church. Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Courtney-Winter's Funeral Home are in care of the arrangements.
