Edna Doris Smith AMHERST, NS - Edna Doris Smith, 97 years of age, of White Birches Retirement Home, Amherst, NS, formerly of Nappan, NS, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord on Sunday, February 19, 2006, at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Nappan, NS. Born in Nappan, NS, she was the twin daughter of the late Ephriam and Lydia (Ripley) Smith and was the last surviving member of her family. Edna's love and devotion, positive attitude and strength were an inspiration to all. She enjoyed spending her summers with her family at her cottage at Jackson's Point. Edna enjoyed her crafts - quilting, knitting, crocheting and gardening. Her family cherishes the many quilts that she has given them over the years. She was an avid worker in her church, Nappan United. At Social Functions, you would see Edna working in the Pie and Roll "room". She delighted in the fellowship with her parishioners and her neighbours. Over the last few years, she resided at White Birches Retirement Home in Amherst. She was content there and enjoyed the companionship of the residents and staff. They were very kind and helpful to her and the family. Edna will be deeply missed by her four daughters, Joan Rolfe of Riverside, NB, Phyllis Porter of Lower Sackville, NS, Shirley Stiles (Bill) of Grand Island, Florida, Gloria Jean Chapman (Bill) of St. Catharine's, ON. She also leaves to mourn her passing - ten grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren and one great great grandson, Spencer; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Wallace; her sisters, Lottie Ripley, Carrie Ripley, twin sister Elda Donn; her brothers, Harold, Lawson, Sterling and Charles; sons-in-law, Clayton Rolfe, Carl Porter and a granddaughter, Tammy (Stiles) Sims. Arrangements are entrusted to Furlong's Funeral Home Ltd, Amherst with visiting hours on Wednesday, February 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. A celebration of Edna's life will be held at the Cumberland Memorial Chapel on Thursday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Lorraine Hill Avendano officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the chapel for family and friends. Spring burial will take place in the Amherst Cemetery.
