JOSEPH EDWARD ASSELIN Joseph Edward Asselin, 73, of 36 Rawn Rd., Atikokan, Ont., passed away peacefully at the Atikokan General Hospital in Atikokan on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003. He was born April 12, 1930 in Dilke Township (Pinewood), Ont. Ed married Greta Miniely on Sept. 4, 1953 and together they came to Atikokan in 1954, where they raised their family. Ed worked at the Steep Rock iron mines for 27 years. Following the mine closures, he worked in the mines in Pickle Lake, Ont. and Ignace, Ont., keeping his home in Atikokan. Ed always could be found in his garage, where he spent his spare time “tinkering,” Ed is survived by his wife, Greta; son, Ron (Sue) Asselin of Atikokan, Ont.; son, Randy Asselin of Thunder Bay, Ont.; and daughter, Cheryl (Kevin) Shmyr of Atikokan, Ont. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Nicole (Mark) Bingham of Atikokan, Ont., Angela (Shawn) Anderson of Atikokan, Ont., Amanda (Aaron Johnson) of Atikokan, Ont., Amanda’s dad, Todd James, and Michelle Asselin of Red Rock, Ont.; and great-grandchildren, Marni, Shawnte, and Cael. He also is survived by his brothers, Roland Asselin of Sleeman, Ont., Leo (Rose) of Saskatoon, Sask., and Rene (Bev) of Thunder Bay, Ont.; sister, Irene (Al) Lougheed of Thunder Bay, Ont.; asister-in-law, Sherrie Asselin of Fort Frances, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, David and Albertine Asselin; brothers, Dona Asselin and Sid Asselin; and sisters, Lola Gaudette and Rose Wilson. Cremation has taken place, to be followed by a private family service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Atikokan General Hospital, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Thunder Bay Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
