FORTIER, D'Iberville D'Iberville Fortier est mort paisiblement à son domicile le 22 avril 2006, à l'âge de 80 ans. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse, Marie-Thérèse Allégret, ses enfants, Sébastien et Valérie, ainsi que sa soeur Colette (Paul Dufresne) et son Frère Roland (Mercedès Losier). M. Fortier a oeuvré avec distinction dans la diplomatie canadienne. Entré au Ministère des Affaires Extérieures du Canada en 1952, il a occupé des postes variés au Canada et à l'étranger. Il a représenté le Canada à la Commission d'Armistice au Vietnam, été Directeur du service de presse de l'Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique Nord (OTAN), a servi successivement comme ambassadeur du Canada à Tunis, Rome et Bruxelle, et occupé des fonctions importantes au Ministère à Ottawa. Il a ensuite été nommé Commissaire aux langues officielles, poste qu'il a occupé pendant sept ans, couronnant à ce titre ses multiples contributions à la promotion de la langue française au Canada. M. Fortier a reçu la médaille d'Officier de l'Ordre du Canada. On gardera le souvenir d'un homme de culture, foncièrement honnête, généreux enthousiaste, doué d'humour et de sens critique, mais surtout un bon vivant. La messe commémorative aura lieu le samedi 29 avril 2006 à 11 h en l'église St-Charles (135, rue Barrette, Vanier). He leaves behind his wife, Marie-Therese Allegret, his children, Sebastien and Valerie, his sister Colette (Paul Dufresne) and his brother Roland (Mercedes Losier). Fortier had a distinguished career in Canada's Diplomatic Service. Joining the Department of External Affairs in 1952, he held a variety of functions in Canada and abroad. He represented Canada on the Armistice Commission in Vietnam, served as Head of the press office of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), served consecutively as Canadas ambassador to Tunisia, Italy, Belgium and assumed various important functions in the Department in Ottawa. He was then appointed and served for 7 years as Canadas Official Languages Commissioner, crowning in this function his lifelong contributions to the promotion of the French language in Canada. Mr. Fortier was awarded the medal of Officer of the Order of Canada. He leaves behind the memory of a man of culture, profoundly honest and generous, endowed with both humor and critical sense, but above all bon vivant.
