Janice Clark passed away peacefully at Temiskaming Hospital, New Liskeard on January 23, 2006 of complications following ovarian cancer treatments in Israel. Janice was the beloved wife of Doug for 24 years and dear mother of Ben, Dan and Sophia. She was a cherished daughter of Helen and Art Farintosh of Toronto, born September 17, 1955. She is survived by sisters Ann (Bob Faust) and Lynn (Tom MacLean), and brothers Don (Carol) and Andy (Jennifer Rawlinson). Janice earned Bachelor's of Science and Education degrees from University of Toronto, and worked as an English teacher (in Toronto and briefly at the New Liskeard Agricultural College) and copy-editor and writer in Toronto and Vancouver, before moving with Doug to New Liskeard in 1985 and starting our family. She volunteered with the South Temiskaming Literacy Council, the New Liskeard Public Library Board and as an instructor-co-ordinator for Temiskaming Nordic Ski Club's Jackrabbit program of children's cross-country skiing. In one of those bold splashes of colour on the canvas of life that Janice was so capable of, she completed our family by finding in Honduras in 1991 the one girl in the world in that was the perfect fit for our family. Janice put her greatest love and energy into being a mother and wife, but as attested to by the many people paying respects at Perrin's Funeral Chapel and the service at St. Paul‚s United Church on January 28, she also shared her unique talent and great pleasure in connecting genuinely and personally with other people. Janice's family is deeply appreciative of the personalized sermon Minister Kitty Miller delivered, of the moving musical selections performed by Patti Campbell and Brenda Forsythe, as well as the touching eulogies from Janice's cousin Guy Farintosh, long-time friends Cynthia Dann-Beardsley and Mary Lovett, and her brother Don. Our daughter Sophia chose Bryan Adams‚ "When You Love Someone" as a musical selection to honour her Mom. Our second son Dan played Pachelbel's Canon in D on the piano in a tender tribute to his mother, while our oldest son Ben shared his written homage with family privately. Lorrie Clark's written tribute in the register conveyed a lovely essence of Janice. Thank you all for creating a remembrance worthy of Janice, and a true celebration of her life. Janice and her family owe an immense debt of thanks to the many, many people in her extended world-wide web of support during her long illness. Dr. Jake Jeffries' surgical expertise gave Janice the best possible start prior to chemotherapy. Dr. Germond and Lizette Deacon at the north-eastern Ontario regional cancer centre were unstinting with their time, concern and expertise to do everything for Janice they could within the Ontario-approved treatment protocols. Dr. Joel Ward & Dr. Tom McDermott and Wendy Smith at their clinic office were truly exceptional in their care. Thank you Wayne LaPerle for your road rescue, bringing Janice and Doug quickly from Toronto airport to Temiskaming Hospital after their emergency return from Israel. The palliative care team -- and during earlier hospitalizations, the general nursing staff -- at Temiskaming Hospital were so considerate, capable and calming. Cindy Pearson and Lynn Baldovin have been nursing angels and friends extraordinaire for Janice through the years. Professor Shimon Slavin, Dr. Benji Gesundheit and the rest of the staff at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem welcomed Janice like family, and we thank them all for their compassion and expertise, doing everything in your power to help Janice beat this most deadly of cancers. Doug thanks Janice's siblings Ann, Don and Lynn for interrupting their busy lives to spend time assisting Janice with her treatments in Israel. We owe Dr. Paul King a special thanks for his help assisting Janice to shed a crushing burden no person should have to carry. Wendy McGarry and Leslie Simms from the Cancer Society Daffodil room have provided fabulous emotional support to Janice and to Doug. Warm and compassionate Ingrid Stevenson of Fort Frances, Ontario and Janice supported each other as only those struggling with the same disease can do. The community outpouring of flowers, food, and support for Doug and the children in many forms has been deeply touching. The family gratefully appreciates any donations in Janice's memory to the Temiskaming Hospital Cat Scan Foundation or the Temiskaming Hospital / Community Cancer Support fund. George Carlin wrote "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." We always want more, but by this measure, life with Janice was full indeed. Janice showed great bravery throughout her life in repeated struggles against life-threatening illnesses, but along the way raised three great children, helped complete her husband Doug as a wiser and more compassionate person, and brought much sparkle and happiness into the lives of her family and friends. Her family invites everyone to join with them in rejoicing forever that Janice lived.
