STEVENS, Paul Harvey August 30, 1916 - July 3, 2007 Paul was born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised by his adoptive mother Gladys (widow of Samuel Stevens) and stepfather John MacCulloch on a farm near Salt Springs, Nova Scotia. He remained a U.S. citizen to the end of his life, despite spending most of it as a resident of Canada. He worked in mines and logging camps, married Emma Chisholm, and had a daughter, Muriel Joyce. After serving in the U.S. Army in the Pacific in the Second World War, he divorced his wife and went to work in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. It was there that he met his second wife, Phyllis Mary Reay of Montreal. They moved to Boston in the late 1940s and had two children, Phyllis and Edward, before moving again in 1955, this time to Ottawa. Paul worked for Ottawa Valley Pump Service and RGI Petroleum, and lived in Nepean for the remainder of his life. Paul was practical, resourceful and straightforward. He knew how to hunt for food. He could fix damn near anything. He had some rough edges, and could be stubborn and blunt, but he was also capable of considerable compassion and generosity. He had no tolerance for phoniness or doubletalk, knew his own worth, and never claimed to be perfect. Although his formal education was limited, he was an intelligent man with a love of classical music and a broad range of interests. Paul was well liked and respected by his neighbours and friends. He did not hold religious beliefs, yet he had a kind of reverence for the natural world, and a sense of his role within it. He was kind to animals. He loved his wife. He had a sense of humour. All in all, he was a good man, and he did the best he could over the course of a long life. He will be missed. Paul lost his wife in 1994, and his daughter Phyllis in 1999. He is survived by his children Joyce and Ed, and by grandchildren Christine, Beverly, Marian, Katie and Patrick, as well as five great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Fairfield Manor Retirement Home and the Queensway Carleton Hospital for the patient, attentive and expert care that Paul received in his last years and in his last days. Many thanks are also due to the neighbours, friends and relations who were kind to Paul, visited him, or just kept in touch over the years. In accordance with Paul's wishes, there will be no funeral service. Those who knew him are invited to attend an informal memorial reception from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 at the home of Ed and Sheila Stevens, 7 Shaw Court, Kanata. For directions, please call (613) 836-5599. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation will be appreciated. Donation forms will be available at the reception.
